Congratulations to FM Alphaeus Ang.
WCC run the West Auckland Secondary Interschool Chess Championship and 2020 marked the final NZCF West Auckland Interschool Chess series that Alphaeus would be eligible to play in. This was the 11th time Alphaeus had another picket fence result by winning every game in all rounds.
Alphaeus had played as board 1 for his school’s A (best) team from 2010 as a year 3 in the Primary division to 2020 as a year 13 in the Secondary division.
Alphaeus has won every game in all rounds through the years, having an unbroken perfect winning score streak through all 11 years of West Auckland Interschools playing as board 1 for his school’s A team through the Primary (St. Paul’s Primary School), Intermediate (Liston College) and Secondary (Liston College) divisions.
Alphaeus was also a junior at WCC and became Waitakere Chess Club adults champion in 2015 and 2016.

Waitakere Chess Club played Splice Chess Club in Ellen Melville hall in the city. The 8 person WCC team ran out winners by 5:3. Congratulations to Leo, Rouen, Davide, Aidan & Murray for their wins. Though the main thing was that a good time was had by all us West Auckland Yokels visiting the big smoke.

The first ever “West Auckland Town Vs Gown Cup” was played last night. The four person Avondale College team (who are the winners of the West Auckland Secondary school competition) took on the top 8 of Waitakere Chess Club. Two rounds of rapid play (25 + 5). Avondale College won the match and thus the 2019 cup 5-3.

Waitakere Chess Club plan to make this an annual challenge between West Auckland’s only chess club and west Auckland’s secondary school champions.

Good luck to Avondale college when they play in the national championship in Palmerston North in September.

Waitakere Chess Club hosted 120 kids for the West Auckland Primary interschools competition for 2019. Fruitvale, Blockhouse Bay and St Pauls get to go to the national championship in Palmerston North. Our thanks to Bob & Viv Smith for making this such a success.

Waitakere Chess Club ran the 2019 Trusts open in Henderson. This was year 42 of the tournament and with 104 entrants, playing 6 games in 3 days, this is probably the largest rated full weekend chess tournament in NZ.
